Pilates for Pregnancy and Postpartum Recovery

Pilates is an ideal form of exercise to maintain fitness during pregnancy while preparing the body for childbirth. Pilates’ focus on functional core strength and pelvic stability helps to support the pelvis and spine through the changing demands on the body during pregnancy. Towards the end of the pregnancy you will learn how to properly relax the muscles of the core and pelvis as is required during childbirth. Because of the rapidly changing needs of the body during pregnancy, individual lessons are necessary during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. You are welcome to join a group class during your first trimester, but please let your instructor know that you are pregnant, as there are modifications that need to be made right from the start of pregnancy.

Pilates is also fantastic for postpartum recovery, even after c-section. We focus in particular on strengthening the pelvic muscles (or actually learning to relax them after a c-section), re-integrating the ribcage into the body after it has expanded during pregnancy, and retraining the deep abdominal muscles while assessing any separation of the superficial abdominals and training accordingly. Individual lessons are the best option to begin Pilates training after childbirth, and you can bring your little one along! Our private, quiet studio is a perfect spot for your baby to nap while you train or roll on a mat near you.
